Revere was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on January 1, 1735. He was the son of a French Huguenot goldsmith and a Scottish mother. Revere was apprenticed to his father at a young age and learned the trade of silversmithing. He also became an accomplished engraver.

In 1770, Revere was involved in the Boston Massacre. He witnessed the British soldiers firing on a crowd of unarmed civilians. The massacre radicalized Revere and he became a strong advocate for American independence.

In 1774, Revere was elected to the Massachusetts Provincial Congress. He served on the Committee of Safety, which was responsible for planning the defense of Massachusetts against the British.

In April 1775, Revere was sent on a mission to warn Samuel Adams and John Hancock that the British were planning to arrest them. Revere rode from Boston to Lexington, Massachusetts, on horseback. He arrived in Lexington just before dawn and warned Adams and Hancock of the British plans. The two men escaped and the British were forced to retreat.

Revere's midnight ride became a legend and he became a symbol of American liberty. He continued to serve the Patriot cause throughout the war. He designed the seal of the United States and he helped to establish the United States Mint.

Paul Revere died in Boston on May 10, 1818. He was 83 years old. He is buried in the Granary Burying Ground in Boston.
