Margaret Laurence (1926-1987) was one of Canada's most celebrated and influential authors. Her novels, short stories, and essays explored the complexities of Canadian society, particularly the lives of women and immigrants. Laurence was also a keen observer of the natural world, and her writing often reflects her deep love of the Canadian landscape.

Laurence was born in Neepawa, Manitoba, in 1926. Her father was a Presbyterian minister, and her mother was a schoolteacher. Laurence grew up in a small town, and her early experiences there would later provide the inspiration for many of her stories. She attended high school in Winnipeg, and then went on to study at United College in Winnipeg and Somerville College in Oxford, England. After graduating from Oxford, Laurence worked as a journalist and editor in England and Ghana. In 1950, she married Jack Laurence, a fellow journalist. The couple had three children.

The novel tells the story of a young woman who moves to Vancouver and becomes involved in the counterculture movement. Laurence's fifth novel, Diviners, was published in 1974. The novel tells the story of a group of women who search for their own identities. Laurence's sixth novel, The Boatman's Daughter, was published in 1988. The novel tells the story of a young woman who grows up in a small town and then moves to the city. Laurence's seventh and final novel, The Shrine of the Book, was published in 1985. The novel tells the story of a group of people who work in a library. Laurence's novels have been translated into more than 30 languages. She has received numerous awards, including the Governor General's Award, the Commonwealth Writers' Prize, and the Free Download of Canada. Laurence died in 1987 at the age of 61.
