Early Life and Education
Neil Alden Armstrong was born on August 5, 1930, in Wapakoneta, Ohio. He was the son of Stephen Koenig Armstrong, an auditor, and Viola Louise Engel Armstrong, a homemaker. Armstrong had two younger siblings, a brother named Dean and a sister named June.
Armstrong's family moved to several different towns during his childhood, but he eventually settled in Upper Sandusky, Ohio. He attended Blume High School, where he was a star athlete and student. Armstrong was also a member of the Boy Scouts of America, and he earned the rank of Eagle Scout.
After graduating from high school, Armstrong attended Purdue University on a Navy scholarship. He studied aeronautical engineering and graduated with honors in 1955.
Naval Career
After graduating from Purdue, Armstrong joined the U.S. Navy. He served as a naval aviator and flew combat missions during the Korean War. Armstrong was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his heroism in combat.
After the Korean War, Armstrong continued to serve in the Navy as a test pilot. He flew a variety of experimental aircraft and helped to develop new technologies for the Navy.
NASA Career
In 1962, Armstrong was selected by NASA to be an astronaut. He was part of the first group of astronauts, known as the Mercury Seven. Armstrong's first space mission was Gemini 8, which was launched in 1966. During this mission, Armstrong and his crewmate, David Scott, performed the first successful docking of two spacecraft in orbit.
Armstrong's second space mission was Apollo 11, which was launched in 1969. This mission was the first to land humans on the moon. On July 20, 1969, Armstrong became the first person to walk on the moon.
Armstrong's moonwalk was a historic event that was watched by millions of people around the world. He planted an American flag on the moon and left a plaque that said, "Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the Moon July 1969, A.D. We came in peace for all mankind."
Later Life
After retiring from NASA, Armstrong became a professor of aerospace engineering at the University of Cincinnati. He also served on the board of directors of several companies and organizations.
Armstrong died on August 25, 2012, at the age of 82. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

Neil Armstrong was a true American hero who inspired generations of people. His accomplishments will never be forgotten. He is an example of what can be achieved through hard work, determination, and courage.
