Toussaint was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, in 1766. He was the son of a free black father and a slave mother. Toussaint's father died when he was young, and his mother was forced to sell him into slavery to pay off her debts. Toussaint was sent to New York City, where he was sold to a wealthy merchant named John Keating. Keating treated Toussaint well, and allowed him to attend school and learn a trade.
