The Vanderbilts: A Family of Wealth and Power

The Vanderbilt family was one of the wealthiest and most powerful families in American history. Cornelius Vanderbilt, the patriarch of the family, made his fortune in shipping and railroads. The Biltmore Estate was completed in 1895 and quickly became one of the most popular tourist destinations in the United States. It was a symbol of the wealth and power of the Gilded Age, and it attracted visitors from all over the world.

Love and Loss at Biltmore

George Vanderbilt married Edith Stuyvesant Dresser in 1896. The couple had one child, a daughter named Cornelia. The Vanderbilts lived a life of luxury at Biltmore, but their happiness was short-lived.

In 1914, George Vanderbilt died of a heart attack at the age of 51. Edith was devastated by her husband's death, and she retreated into a life of seclusion at Biltmore. She died in 1954 at the age of 88.

Cornelia Vanderbilt married John Francis Amherst Cecil in 1924. The couple had two children, a son named George and a daughter named Edith. Cornelia died in 1976 at the age of 78.

The Biltmore Estate Today
