Somewhere Out There: My Animated Life is the highly anticipated memoir from legendary animator Glen Keane. With over four decades of experience in the animation industry, Keane has brought to life some of the most iconic and beloved characters in film history, including Ariel from The Little Mermaid, Aladdin from Aladdin, and Tarzan from Tarzan. In this inspiring and beautifully illustrated book, Keane shares his personal journey, offering unique insights into the art of storytelling, filmmaking, and the transformative power of animation.
Growing up in a small town in Pennsylvania, Keane was always fascinated by drawing and storytelling. He would spend hours sketching and creating his own animated films. After graduating from high school, Keane attended the California Institute of the Arts, where he studied character animation. It was there that he met some of the most influential people in his life, including his mentor, Eric Larson. Larson taught Keane the importance of strong storytelling and character development, lessons that would stay with him throughout his career.
After graduating from CalArts, Keane began his career at Walt Disney Animation Studios. He worked on a number of classic films, including The Fox and the Hound, The Great Mouse Detective, and Beauty and the Beast. In 1994, Keane left Disney to join Pixar Animation Studios, where he worked on Toy Story, A Bug's Life, and Monsters, Inc. In 2008, Keane returned to Disney, where he directed the Oscar-nominated film Tangled.
Throughout his career, Keane has been praised for his ability to create characters that are both emotionally resonant and visually stunning. His work has been recognized with numerous awards, including an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film for Tangled. In Somewhere Out There: My Animated Life, Keane shares his insights into the creative process, offering advice on everything from character design to storyboarding to directing. He also shares personal stories about his experiences working with some of the biggest names in the animation industry, including Walt Disney, John Lasseter, and Steve Jobs.
