In this powerful and inspiring memoir, an Iraqi woman shares her story of escaping the horrors of war and finding a new life in the heartland of America.

Born in Baghdad in 1972, Widad was a young girl when the Iran-Iraq War broke out. She lived through years of bombing and violence, and saw her family and friends killed. In 1991, when the Gulf War began, Widad and her family were forced to flee their home.

They spent the next several years living in refugee camps in Jordan and Saudi Arabia. In 1996, they were finally granted asylum in the United States.

Widad and her family settled in Nebraska, where they faced a new set of challenges. They had to learn a new language, adapt to a new culture, and find work. But Widad was determined to make a new life for herself and her family.

She went to college, got a job, and raised a family. She also became an active member of her community, volunteering her time to help other refugees.

Widad's story is a testament to the human spirit. It is a story of hope, resilience, and the power of the human spirit to overcome adversity.
