The Triumvirate

In 60 BC, Caesar formed a political alliance with Pompey the Great and Crassus. This alliance was known as the First Triumvirate.

The Triumvirate was a powerful force in Roman politics. It controlled the government and the army.

Caesar used the Triumvirate to further his own ambitions. He gained control of Gaul, and he used his military victories to increase his popularity.

The Triumvirate eventually collapsed in 53 BC. Pompey and Crassus were killed, and Caesar became the sole ruler of Rome.

In 49 BC, Caesar crossed the Rubicon River with his army. This act started the Roman Civil War.

Caesar's forces were victorious in the Civil War. He defeated Pompey at the Battle of Pharsalus in 48 BC.
