Henry John Cody was born on May 6, 1868, in Embro, Ontario. His parents, John and Mary Cody, were devout Anglicans who instilled in their son a deep faith and a strong work ethic. Education and Vocation

Cody's passion for learning led him to pursue higher education at the University of Toronto, where he graduated with honors in classics. After completing his undergraduate studies, he enrolled at Wycliffe College, the Anglican theological seminary in Toronto. It was during his time at Wycliffe that Cody felt a profound calling to serve God and the church.

Ordained Ministry

In 1893, Cody was ordained as an Anglican priest. He began his ministry in the Diocese of Toronto, serving in various parishes. His exceptional preaching and pastoral skills quickly gained recognition. In 1904, he was appointed rector of St. Paul's Anglican Church in Toronto, one of the most prominent parishes in the city.

Archbishop of Toronto

Cody's leadership and dedication caught the attention of the Anglican Church of Canada. In 1910, he was elected as the Archbishop of Toronto, a position he held for over three decades. As Archbishop, Cody played a pivotal role in the growth and development of the Anglican Church in Canada. He oversaw the establishment of new parishes, schools, and hospitals. He also played a key role in the ecumenical movement, fostering closer ties with other Christian denominations.

Education Advocate

Cody was a passionate advocate for education. He believed that every child, regardless of background, deserved access to quality education. As Archbishop, he established several prestigious educational institutions, including Trinity College School and the Bishop Strachan School. He also served as Chancellor of the University of Toronto for over 30 years, guiding the university through a period of significant growth and expansion.

Social Justice Champion

Cody was a tireless advocate for social justice. He spoke out against poverty, inequality, and discrimination. He established social service agencies and orphanages to support the marginalized and vulnerable. During the Great Depression, he played a leading role in providing aid to those who had lost everything. Humanitarian

In 1951, he published his autobiography, "A Parson in Politics," which provided a candid account of his life and work.
