A Rwandan Story of Healing and Forgiveness
In 1994, Rwanda was torn apart by a genocide that killed over 800,000 people. The country was left in ruins, and the people were traumatized. One of the survivors of the genocide was a woman named Immaculée Ilibagiza. Immaculée was a Tutsi, and her family was targeted by the Hutu militias. She was forced to watch as her parents and siblings were murdered. Immaculée was only 15 years old at the time.
After the genocide, Immaculée was left alone and homeless. She had lost everything. But she was determined to survive. She found shelter in a church, and she began to rebuild her life. Immaculée's story is a powerful example of the power of forgiveness. She was able to forgive the people who had killed her family. She said, "I have forgiven them because I know that hatred will only destroy me. I want to live a life of love and peace."
