Who Was Fidel Castro?
Fidel Castro was a Cuban revolutionary and politician who served as the Prime Minister of Cuba from 1959 to 1976 and then as its President from 1976 to 2008. He was a dominant figure in the Cuban Revolution and the Cold War.

Castro was born in 1926 in eastern Cuba. He studied law at the University of Havana and became involved in politics as a student. In 1953, he led an unsuccessful attack on the Moncada Barracks in Santiago de Cuba. He was imprisoned for his role in the attack, but was released in 1955.
The Cuban Revolution
In 1956, Castro returned to Cuba and launched a guerrilla war against the government of Fulgencio Batista. The guerrilla war lasted for two years and ended with Batista's overthrow in 1959. Castro then became the Prime Minister of Cuba.
After taking power, Castro nationalized many industries and businesses in Cuba. He also implemented a number of social reforms, including a literacy campaign and a universal healthcare system.
Fidel Castro's Communist Government
In 1961, Castro declared Cuba to be a socialist state. He aligned Cuba with the Soviet Union and other communist countries. Castro's government was authoritarian and suppressed dissent.
Castro's government also played a role in the Cold War. Cuba was a key ally of the Soviet Union and provided support to communist movements around the world. In 1962, the Cuban Missile Crisis brought the world to the brink of nuclear war.
Fidel Castro's Legacy
Fidel Castro died in 2016 at the age of 90. He was a controversial figure, but there is no doubt that he was one of the most important figures in the 20th century.
